We don’t repay God—He lavishes His gifts upon us. When David, at the height of his prosperity, desires to build a house for God, God completely flips the script. Rather than accepting David's offer, He reminds David of all He has already done and promises to build David an everlasting house: a royal dynasty ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The message is clear: God has done for us what we could never do for ourselves. David’s humble response—sitting in God’s presence and asking, “Who am I that you are mindful of me?”—is the only fitting response to the gospel.
